Tapestry
September 22, 2009
7:15 - 8:30 a.m.
The Murano Ballroom in Downtown Tacoma

Using the theme of Tapestry, singer Carole King’s breakout album from the early 1970s, we have a focus and starting point to encompass many elements of people with disabilities and how they fit into mainstream America . . . and the world.

Carole King's Opening Lyrics of Tapestry
"My life has been a tapestry of rich and royal hue
An everlasting vision of the everchanging view
A wondrous woven magic in bits of blue and gold
A tapestry to feel and see, impossible to hold"

Highlights of the event

When we selected the theme this year we chose Tapestry based on the break-out album from Carole King of the 1970s and the oriental rug model. Like people, there are no two tribal rugs alike. Tribal weavers "knot out of their heads" instead of following patterns. Irregularities give tribal rugs their charm. Isn't this just like life, and our own families? Singer Jessie Bell

Drew EbersoleSusan SipesThis year we are honored to have Drew Ebersole and Susan Sipes, MPT, performing with dramatic readings. Susan is a physical therapist with Westgate Orthopaedic Therapy and a part-time actress at Tacoma Musical Playhouse. She will be reading a short, short story entitled Blind. Drew is the Executive Director of the Greater Metro Parks Foundation and was a successful actor with many appearances on TV series like Jag, That 70s Show, and ER as well as several made for TV movies. Drew will be performing a short, short story entitled New Patterns, Old Habits.

Comedian Debbie Wooten. In addition, as a special guest we have Comedian Debbie Wooten. Debbie will not be performing this year for us, but will be speaking as a polio survivor. Knowing Debbie, she may add some zingers to get our attention. She is available for comedy gigs and motivational speeches as well as keynote addresses.

Comedian Debbie Wooten is an expert on overcoming adversity. Debbie has suffered adversity. Born with Spina Bifida, Debbie contracted Polio when she was only five months old. Because of her skin color the white kids wouldn't play with her and the black kids didn?t accept her because she was different. Her adult life wasn't much easier. She had two marriages that ended, one because of suicide, one because of abuse. But fortunately for her audiences she's taken her problems and faced them with strength, grace and a lot of humor. Debbie speaks to thousands of people every year to consistent rave reviews and standing ovations.
