Woven Lives May 6, 2009 - 5:30-7:00 P.M.
Please, join us at TACID for Woven Lives. This wonderful event will feature door prizes, after work snacks, live music, a fun presentation on basket weaving, TACID success stories, and conducted tours of the TACID facility located here on the TCC campus at 6315 South 19th, Tacoma, WA 98466.
Woven Lives will provide basket weaving displays from artists Sheila Wray and Elaine Twogood of the NW Basket Weavers along with piano and voice stylings from the Carole King songbook to illustrate the many elements that become the fabric of our lives. Our community is filled with different cultures and has a rich heritage of people, of personalities, and of art created by hand, which makes our Pierce County homes wonderful and harmonious places to live.
We hope to have an unveiling of the basket that Sheila is creating for the Tapestry auction for September. Based on her Ocean Waves basket (pictured below), we expect a thing of beauty and a joy forever. Bidding will start at $150.00. We also might have centerpieces of baskets from Sheila and Elaine. Sheila and Elaine will be available for questions and answers about weaving during and after the event.
Popeyes Chicken, located at 6240 6th Avenue is supplying us with 2-piece Chicken and Biscuit boxes for our hungry guests. We will also have veggie and fruit trays along with cold cans of soda. This should keep you going until you get home for dinner after our event. Some people say that Popeyes biscuits are the best restaurant biscuits you will ever eat . . . and just to make sure, we will have several selections of jams for you to enjoy with the biscuits.
We will have mostly "mild" fried chicken available, but we will have some of their "spicy" version available also. We will also have some Popeyes coupons available for a free 2 Piece Chicken Dinner with the purchase of a 3 Piece Dinner at the regular menu price just in case you really want to chow down after Woven Lives.
We will also be graced with an appearance by Jannette Saxton, Ms. Wheelchair Washington 2009. Jannette Saxton has had Cerebral Palsy since birth. She was crowned the 2009 Ms. Wheelchair Washington on February 21st. As the new 2009 Ms. Wheelchair Washington, Jannette encourages people with disabilities to pursue a higher education. She believes her education has been an investment and lead to her independence. She is very proud of her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, and Public Relations from Arizona State University, and her Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of San Diego. In 2006, she ended up graduating with a 3.98 grade point average.
Currently, she works as a Specialist for the Mobilization and Deployment Program of Fort Lewis, WA. She works with dual-military and single parent soldiers as they prepare guardianship for their children during a deployment under Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and other military operations of the Armed Forces. This year she wants to work with the Paralyzed Veterans of America and follow up with soldiers when they return from their deployment and visit soldiers who have been injured.
Joining Jannette will be Tammy Wilber, Ms. Wheelchair Washington 2006. The delightful Tammy Wilber appeared at our fundraising breakfast last September. We would like both of them to join us for Tapestry as well.
Highlights of the event
Woven Lives is not a fundraising event, although you can make some purchases, but rather a donor appreciation evening from TACID as well as a donor introduction event for people in our community unfamiliar with what we do. Our fundraiser this year is Tapestry, which will be held at The Murano Hotel Ballroom in downtown Tacoma on September 22, 2009.
